The factory 6.7L Power Stroke crank gear uses an interference-fit design without a traditional keyway or pin securing its timing position. Under certain operating conditions, the gear can move on the crankshaft and alter the relationship between crankshaft and camshaft timing. The SPE timing tool provides a repeatable mechanical reference directly from the crankshaft rather than relying on external measurements, laser alignment, or visual estimation.

The tool locates from the crankshaft snout, balancer dowel pin, and crankshaft outside diameter to establish an accurate reference point for top dead center and crank gear positioning. An adjustable pointer can then be used to align the appropriate crank gear timing tooth with the cam gear timing marks during re-timing or engine assembly.
